Preparing for Your Orthopaedic Consultation

A well-prepared consultation can help your doctor understand your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals.

Before your appointment, consider bringing:

  • Previous X-rays, MRI or CT scans
  • Relevant medical reports
  • Previous treatment or surgical records
  • A list of your current medications
  • Details of any previous injuries or treatments
  • Information about when your symptoms started
  • Any questions or concerns you would like to discuss

If you have digital copies of your reports, keeping them available on your phone can also be helpful during your consultation.

Care After Knee & Hip Replacement Surgery

Recovery after joint replacement is an important part of achieving better mobility and returning safely to everyday activities. Following your surgeon’s instructions, protecting the surgical area and gradually increasing movement can support a smoother recovery.

Rest & Elevation:
For knee procedures, keep your leg elevated above your heart for the first two days by propping it up on 2 or 3 pillows. Do not let the leg hang down.

Bathing: You can generally remove your dressing after 2 days (48 hours) and take a shower, but follow specific clinic instructions regarding covering the incision with plastic wrap. Do not soak the joint in a bathtub or pool until the incisions are completely healed (usually at least 4 weeks).

Exercises: Unless told otherwise, start gentle range-of-motion exercises (like ankle pumps and straight leg raises) on the day of surgery to prevent blood clots and regain strength.

Returning to Activity: You can usually start other activities a week after surgery, but always talk with Dr. Bahl before driving, biking, or doing strenuous work.

Follow Your Recovery Plan
